'08pc pass HSC, equivalent exams

Dhaka, July 27— The pass rate in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations is 75.

The results show a significant rise in the number of GPA-5 achievers as a total of 39,759 students earned GPA-5, which is 10,765 more than last year.

A total of 5,74,261 students—3,10,849 male and 2,63,412 female--passed in this year's examinations, out of 7,64,828 examinees—4,13,675 male and 3,51,153 female.

As many as 190 foreign students under the Dhaka board sat for the exams, and of them 167 came out successful with 41 achieving GPA-5.

The combined pass percentage under eight education boards has increased to 72.

Education minister Nurul Nahid handed over the exam results to prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday.

Hasina expressed her satisfaction over the early publication of the results.

The official announcement was made through a video conference between the prime minister and the students of Chandpur Government Women's College.

For the first time the results have been emailed to every participating college, the minister told a press conference at the secretariat.

He credited the concerted effort of all in the 'education family' to the success of the result.

"different steps by the (education) ministry, as well as the tireless efforts of the students, teachers and guardians has brought about this success," he said.

Teletalk users can get the results by sending the first three letters of the relevant board and the roll number through the short message service (sms) to 16222.

Students will also be able to apply for a review of their results by sending a message from Teletalk numbers from July 29 to Aug 12.

Interested students will have to go to the message option on any Teletalk service mobile phone and type 'RSC', the first three letters of the relevant board, the roll number, and the subject code and then send a message to 16222.

After receiving a number in a reply, the students will have to type 'RSC YES', the number they received and their mobile number.

Students may also apply for revision of several subjects by adding the code numbers with commas.

A total of 779,441 students sat for the examinations under 10 education boards, including Madrasa and vocational institutions, from April 5.
