'9 parties join forces with BNP

Dhaka, July 27 – Nine small parties have extended their support to the anti-government movement being spearheaded by the BNP, party's acting secretary-general has claimed.
"The like-minded parties will stay together with a greater consensus on various issues, including the 15th amendment," Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir said after a meeting with the leaders of the eight pro-opposition parties on Wednesday.
The eight parties have also supported Thursday's protest programme, called by the BNP, he told reporters at the party's Naya Paltan headquarters.
Fakhrul sat with the leaders of the Jatiya Ganatantrik Party, National People's Party, League, Bangladesh NAP, c Party, National Awami League (Bhasani), Labour Party and Democratic Alliance to discuss the movement strategies.
Later in the day, Fakhrul also met Kalyan Party chairman Syed Mohammad Ibrahim, a retired army personnel, at its office.
Ibrahim after the meeting told reporters that his party supports the BNP's movement to retain the caretaker government system and annul the 15th amendment to the constitution.
"We've received an invitation from the Leader of the Opposition," he said.
Fakhrul said, "We've agreed in principle to work together for scrapping the 15th amendment and will discuss later about further steps.
"BNP currently has three allies – Bangladesh -e-, Oikya Jote and Khelafat-e-Majlish.
Fakhrul said the eight parties, believing in the philosophy of nationalism, "agreed with our programmes".
The main opposition has started campaigning to broad-base the alliance.
As part of the drive, the BNP sat with former party man A Q M Badruddoza-led Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Oli Ahmed and Kader Siddiqui of Krishak Sramik Janata League.
LDP on Wednesday put forth specific proposals before the BNP for conjuring up the movement.
The proposals were presented at a secretary-general-level meeting of the two parties at Fakhrul's residence at Uttara.
