Thu, Jul 28th, 2011

Dhaka, July 27 – Bangladesh Legal Aid Service Society has called upon the government not to impose restrictions on the movement of rickshaws until an alternative arrangement is made.

This call was made at a press conference on the Supreme Court premises on Wednesday.

"Ninety percent of the city dwellers travel by rickshaw.

But restrictions on the movement of the three-wheeler have put citizens to inconvenience, especially the school going children," it said.

Advocate Waliur Rahman read out through a written statement at the press conference asking the government to remove the restriction immediately.

'Help students develop confidence: PM

Wed, Jul 27th, 2011

Dhaka, July 27– Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has urged teachers to teach the students properly in the classroom so that they can develop self-confidence.

"You should teach in the classrooms attentively.

I firmly believe that our sons and daughters are meritorious," Hasina said on Wednesday.

She made the call when the education minister Nurul Nahid handed over the results of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations to her at a ceremony at Ganobhaban, in the presence of chairmen of the country's 10 education boards.

Hasina also said that the SSC and HSC examinations should be held with the same question papers under all the education boards.

The prime minister published the results with a laptop at 10:51am.

The education minister handed over a compact disc (CD) with the HSC results and a book containing the results from all the education boards to the prime minister at the ceremony.

Later on, the chairmen of all the 10 education boards handed over the results of their respective boards to the prime minister.

The prime minister later formally announced the results through a video conference with foreign minister Dipu Moni and teachers and students of Chandpur Government Girls College.

She congratulated the students who were successful in the examinations and also asked them to prepare for higher education.

Hasina requested those who failed to pass in the HSC examinations this year not to be frustrated and be more attentive.

The prime minister said that improving the education system is one of the main objectives of her government.

"Classes from renowned schools and colleges of Dhaka will be telecast live across the country.

We can ensure the advancement of the education sector by taking such advantages.

"Hasina thanked the education ministry, the education boards, the educational institutions and all others concerned for publishing the HSC results within 55 days this year.

Pointing out the formation of an Education Assistance Trust Fund to ensure education for children of poor guardians, the prime minister said that the government has already allocated Tk 10 billion to the fund.

She stressed the importance of using a digital system, including e-books, to bring modernization to the education sector.
