'Batali Hill people to be rehabilitated
Jul 26th, 2011
Chittagong, July 25 -Poor landless dwellers living in the vulnerable area along Batali Hill in Tigerpass of the port city will be rehabilitated in a seven-storey
building.
The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) took the decision on Monday at its regular general meeting, chaired by mayor M Manzur Alam, days after 17 people were killed in a
landslide in that area.
Some 200 families would be accommodated in the proposed building on the CCC's own land, where each would be given 250 square feet flat at low prices, to be paid back in
15 years.
Following continued heavy rain, a huge chunk of earth and a retaining wall of the CCC collapsed on July 1, burying six hillside shanties, leaving scores of people
trapped.
Monday's meeting was attended by panel mayor, councilors and officials of the CCC and other government agencies.
Public relations officer of the CCC Saifuddin Ahmed told bdnews24.
com that they had sent a notice to the 200 families, already listed, living in that area under risk to vacate the place.
The tiny flats will have a room, a kitchen and a toilet.
