Noakhali, July 27 — At least six suspected robbers have been beaten to death by a mob in Companyganj after the suspects allegedly killed a villager.
Police arrested three other suspects from the scene after the incident at Rahimar Tek of Charkakra union in the early hours on Wednesday.
Assistant superintendent of Noakhali police A F M Nizam Uddin told reporters that the local people had blocked the suspects in the area after a robbery at around 3am.
Six of them were beaten to death, he said.
Four of the deceased were identified as Nigro Helal, 'Alauddin', 'Kalam' and 'Faruk', he said.
The suspects were facing several cases of robbery, the police officer said.
One villager, Mosharraf Hossain Masud, was killed by the robbers before they were beaten up by a mob, he added.
Companyganj Police Station officer-in-charge Rafik Ullah said Masud was shot dead as he tried to prevent the robbers from entering his shop.
"Locals informed us after catching nine robbery suspects.
Four of them were beaten to death before we reached the spot.
Of the five other severely injured, two died at Companyganj Health Complex," he said.
The three survivors were transferred to the Noakhali Medical College Hospital, the police officer said.
They were identified as Nurul Polash, 33, 'Abdullah', 29, and Noor Mohammad Rubel, 23.
Rafik said 14 rounds of live cartridge, four sharp weapons and four mobile phone sets were recovered from the spot.
According to him, police filed three cases over the incident — one for robbery charge and another under the Arms Act against the three arrestees and 30-40 unidentified people, and third one for the killing of suspected robbers.
Infuriated at repeated robberies, residents at Aminbazar in Savar beat six students to death taking them as robbers on July 18.
A case was filed against the lone survivor Al-Amin on the charge of robbery, and another against around 500 locals for the killing.
After the incident, home minister Shahara Khatun urged people not to take law in own hand.
