'Ctg AL meet turns into melee

Thu, Jul 28th, 2011

Chittagong, July 27 – Senior leaders of the ruling Awami League failed to prevail over a chaos that had the better of a party workers' gathering in Chittagong.

Chief guest of the programme presidium member Shahara Khatun also failed to prevent the party leaders and activists from chanting slogans against each other at the local Hall on Wednesday.

The gathering was organised jointly by the metropolitan, north and south units of the ruling party.

Shahara, also the home minister, at one point censured the activists.

She said, "While I'm paying tribute to the departed soul of the Father of the Nation [Sheikh Mujibur Rahman], you're clapping your hands and chanting slogans.

"What sort of Awami Leaguers are you!" she wondered.

Several activists even stepped on to the dais when she was speaking.

Chaos marked the day since the beginning of the programme as supporters of two city unit big-guns A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Afsarul Amin started slogan-shouting slogans against each other.

Even the two 'rival' leaders failed to calm them down.

None of the speakers could comfortably deliver his or her speech due to the unending fray.

Things came to such a pass that divisional organising secretary Ahmed Hossain left the dais frustrated without delivering the full speech, and district unit (north) president Mosharraf Hossain walked out of the event itself.

The programme, supposed to be attended by the Awami League activists, also had a large participation from the pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League activists.
