'Teachers call for ban on coaching centers
Fri, Jul 22nd, 2011
Dhaka, July 21 — Principals of several educational institutions have demanded enactment of a new law to ban the operation of coaching centers.
They placed the demand on Thursday at a meeting with education minister Nurul Nahid at the ministry.
But the minister Nahid did not nod.
"It's not possible to ban the centers without any notice.
Coaching centers can be banned after creating public opinion against it," he said.
Nahid, however, termed the business immoral and suggested the coaching centre owners to wrap up their establishments.
Principals and headmasters of 30 institutions in the city attended the meeting.
Udayan High School headmaster Khaleda Habib and Eden College principal Mahfuja Chowdhury suggested enactment of a law to put an end to coaching business.
They also suggested furthering class-based study.
Nahid said: "Some unexpected incidents in educational institutions are very embarrassing.
Everyone is concerned over the increase in number of such incidents.
""We won't tolerate this.
We need to create public opinion, awareness and social movement against these as merely punishment cannot prevent these incidents," he told the meeting.
Uttara School and College principal Moazzaem Hossain Bhuiyan said: "Most of the abuses of female students are taking place in the coaching centres and we won't be able
to stop these unless the system is scrapped.
"Chairperson of Dhaka education board Fahima Khatun said the number of branches of any educational institution should be fixed.
Mentioning that 'creative system' in exams was introduced to frustrate the coaching centers, she said: "Frequent meetings should be held with the guardians to resolve
different problems and the discipline committees of the institutions should be more dutiful.
"She also said the government should invigorate its control over the private educational institutions.
Director general of the secondary and higher secondary directorate Mohammad Nomanur Rashid said the governing committee should not be blamed at all.
The heads of the institutions should take the responsibility of all issues, he said.
Rashid demanded that a list of the teachers who are involved in coaching centres be made.
"We must take measures when we get the list.
