Dhaka, July 26 – Paribesh Bachao Andolon (PoBA), an environment group, has urged the government to change the name of Environment and Forestry Ministry to 'environment management ministry' and also assign a full minister.
On Tuesday, in a meeting on "Environment and Neighbourhood Management: Ministry's role" at the National Press Club, PoBA chairman of Abu Naser Khan said, "As forestry and environment ministry has not been assigned any minister, it is not functioning properly.
"Safety of environment and neighbourhood should be clearly written in allocation of business documents, not only of environment and forestry ministry, also of industries, communication, energy and mineral resources, water resources, agriculture, land and local government ministries, he urged.
He accuses that some government and private entrepreneurs were responsible for harming the environment.
Former secretary, Sohel Ahmed Choudhury said people should be made aware of the repercussions of harming environment.
Among others, Dhaka University professor of Economics Mamataz Uddin Ahmed, chairman of Botany Nurzahan Begum and Mujibul Haque, a parliament member, spoke on the meeting.
