Dhaka, July 27 – The government has declined to give full magisterial power back to the deputy commissioners (DCs), the local government and rural development minister says.
Syed Ashraful 's statement came following a meeting with the DCs on Wednesday, second day of the three-day conference of the district-level chief administrative officials.
Talking to reporters, he said it is not legally possible to give them the full magisterial power like before.
"They have been given the magisterial power as much as they need to conduct their functions.
It's impossible to give them more power," he said.
On the first day of the conference, the DCs requested the prime minister to return them the full magisterial power.
Before separation of the judiciary on Nov 1, 2007, the DCs used to have the full magisterial power.
"Following the Supreme Court verdict, the judiciary has been separated from the executive branch.
So, their power has been reduced for legal reasons," Ashraful added.
