Dhaka, July 28 — The High Court has summoned the chief of the capital's development authority over the death of a college student, who died after a brick fell on him from an under-construction building of Sagufta Group.
The bench of justices A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Gobinda Chandra Tagore issued the order on Thursday.
It asked Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) chairman Mohammad Nurul Huda to appear before it on Aug 2 to explain whether the development authority has taken any step for the safety measures at the under-construction buildings.
Pallabi police chief Shahabuddin Khalifa, sub-inspectors Ansar Ali and Ajit Roy, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police chief Syed Ziauzzaman and Sagufta Group's assistant contractor Sazzad Hossain were also ordered to appear before the court on the same day.
The bench upheld its previous order to arrest Sagufta Group managing director Khaled Mohammad Jewel Mollah and director Walid Mohammad Mollah who did not appear before the court on health ground.
Asked about the inaction to arrest them, the Pallabi police chief told the court that he did not know why the two sub-inspectors were unable to detain them even after being ordered.
"We've come to know that a top official of the home ministry is a close relative of the Sagufta Group MD.
Has there been any pressure from the ministry in this regard?" the court asked the OC.
Khalifa replied in the negative.
