Mon, Jul 18th, 2011

Dhaka, July 18- Musa Ibrahim, the first Bangladeshi Everest conqueror, and his friends have taken a noble plan to plant 160 million saplings across the country in the next four years.

Mount Everest Foundation has initiated the program.

Dhaka University vice-chancellor professor A A M S Arefin Siddique inaugurated the programme at the Mall Square of the university on Monday.

Prof Arefin welcomed Musa and his friends for taking such a commendable step, saying this will contribute a lot towards protecting the country's biodiversity.

He urged all to make the programme a success as it would help enrich the country's biodiversity.

"Our efforts would continue to keep at least 25 percent of the country's total land as forest areas," Musa told the inaugural function.

Musa said necessary steps would also be taken to discourage planting of the trees that are harmful to the environment.

Addressing the function, tree specialist Dijen Sharma said the commercial cultivation of foreign trees was harmful and unnecessary.

However, the foreign trees could be planted for the beautification of parks.

Tree specialist Mokarram Hossain, journalist Anisul Haque, bird specialist Sharif Khan, Mrittunjoy Roy of the Department of Agriculture Extension and former captain of Bangladesh cricket team Habibul Bashar Sumon, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Saplings of 1,000 wood, fruit and medicinal trees were planted at different parts of the university.
