Angry mob has detained the deputy commissioner of Dinajpur and police officials in a stand-off in Kaharol and Birganj Upazilas over an overnight robbery.
According to locals, the incident occurred on Monday night after a heist in the house of Dr Rajon Debnath of Vasuria village.
The mob set ablaze a microbus carrying plainclothes police late on Monday night, and a pick-up van of Kaharol police and three motor bikes between 10am and 12pm.
The agitating public also besieged Dinajpur deputy commissioner Jamal Uddin, assistant police superintendent Khairul , officer in-charge of Kaharol police Sahidullah
during their visit to the spot on Tuesday morning
Police fired some 20 rounds of blank shots to scatter the mob and but the situation is worsening every minute.
"Locals detained and torched the microbus carrying plainclothes police with firearms suspecting them to be the robbers," said Kaharol's Dabur union chairman Ilias
Hossain.
Birganj police rescued the detained police members by firing blank shots as Bolea Bazar is under Birganj upazila and Vasuria under Kaharol upazila.
